"Baby Claude!"
Nushi pricked his ears.
"Baby Claude, come to mum!"
When there was no response, Nushi knew Baby Claude must have found a gap in the new fence and ventured off. He rose to his feet and shook the dirt off his thick coat. He knew how much his human loved that cat. In fact, he had helped her raise him, and the little cat had grown attached to the much larger dog. Where ever Nushi went, Baby Claude tagged along. Except when adventure called the tabby.

But strange smells had been wafting around the undergrowth by the new farm. This wasn't the suburb they'd previously lived in, this was way up north and far from major clusters of humans, and Nushi knew, instinctively, that this scent was wilder and more ancient than the pets and barn animals he was used to smelling. It had been growing stronger by the day, as if the animal it belonged to was refreshing marks nearby. And Nushi had been growing more alert and protective of the other animals for just as long. None of the other dogs were any good; one was deaf and daft, one small and toothless, and two were the size of rats.
And now, a pampered little cat who'd never known danger and who thought any canine was his friend, had left a trail of his own scent in that same undergrowth. It didn't take Nushi long to find the gap in the fence. Baby Claude must have been digging for a while. Exploring was his next favourite thing after snuggling with Nushi or his human mother.
Nushi widened the hole just enough to squeeze through, loosely filled it again to keep other pets from escaping, and followed the cat's trail. It faded and surged again, over the small creek coming out of the property, through the tree line, and across the meadow where a nearby farmer had his sheep. Strange creatures, Nushi thought, as they observed him, but didn't seem to mind the large predator passing through the herd.
At the far edge of a stubble field, Baby Claude's smell was as strong as ever. And now, in the distance, Nushi could hear his human calling for him, too. It took all he had to resist the urge to obey and return to take one worry off her mind. He knew she needed her little cat back more than anything, a cat she had nursed around the clock, sang lullabies to, and tucked in at night. He had to succeed, and fast.

The grass lining the stubble field grew lusher and denser where it gently sloped up to the edge of a forest. His human had never taken him or the other dogs here. And as he slipped through the first line of trees, he knew she shouldn't. The smell he'd been observing aside from Baby Claude's, was much stronger here than it had been near the farm. It clung to the foliage in different notes, belonging to more than one animal. It smelled almost like dog, but with a note of warning that this wasn't another daft, domesticated pet. Subconsciously, Nushi had always known about wolves. He couldn't picture them, he couldn't pin a smell or a sound on them, but deep down, he'd always known of their existence and their connection to himself, belonging to a breed so ancient it was closer to wolves genetically than most others. And by the height of some of their markings and tufts of fur snagged on tree bark, they must be enormous.

"Mrreeh!"
Baby Claude's unique voice echoed through the forest. It was a distress call, and Nushi had to pinpoint its origin before any wolves did, if they hadn't already. Hoping not to draw too much attention to himself, he answered another mewl with a bark. Sure enough, Baby Claude responded and Nushi knew which way to go. At every mewl, he picked up his pace until he was racing through the trees, shapes and smells zooming past, but no time to be explored.
There he was. In the centre of a clearing, he sat over a freshly killed mouse. His usually friendly, curious eyes were large with fear. Nushi followed his gaze and found the formidable wolf, camouflaged between two boulders, but making no attempt to hide. He had nothing to fear from any creature that wasn't a hunter. Nushi ran up to the small cat's side and Baby Claude slunk around his front legs, purring with relief. Far from relieved himself, Nushi felt the fur along his spine rise.
Always happy to start something with other dogs, Nushi decided to be less bold with the wolf. "I'm sorry if we're trespassing. This cat is new to the area and didn't know any better. I've come to take him back, we won't be bothering you again."
The wolf cocked his head, narrowed his amber eyes, and smirked. "Oh, don't worry, you're not trespassing. Only wolves can trespass on wolf territory. You're no more trespassers than yesterday's doe."
There was no humour in the wolf's words, only smug superiority and scorn for the weaker animals in front of him.
Nushi took a step forward to stand over his quivering friend. "When I say run, you run straight back home and never look back."
The wolf chuckled. "The both of you should have done that a mile ago."
