It was the effort of holding it together that was causing Crowley to grit his teeth, and the biospatial feedback that was causing the bright red eyes. That and the effort of having to remember not to start breathing.
He hadn’t felt like this since the fourteenth century.

- Good Omens (Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett)

------------------------

I like how, in the early pages of the book, we’re told that the reason he’d hated the fourteenth century was because it had been so boring - and then, three hundred pages later or so, it’s thrown in as a simile for how he feels about the impending Apocalypse. Yeah, nice try, Crowley, hun. I’m sure the 50-75% Plague death toll in Europe had nothing at all to do with you not enjoying the 14th. (It also ties in nicely with the rest of his development about becoming steadily more honest with himself throughout the book.)

This is technically a sort-of illustration for my fanfic, A Matter of Convenience, about the start of the Arrangement.
