...braucht das Alleinsein nicht zu fürchten. (Daniel Defoe)

Already for a long time we’ve been intending to post something about the process of the novel series we’re working on. We had written about 20 chapters and have just stopped to rewrite the beginning for the fifth (!) time. It’s almost unbelievable that the first chapters need to be rewritten this often but the beginning has to satisfy us to its fullest – that’s important to us.
One of the main reasons for this frequency of rewriting was the characters.
We had started with a much too high amount of protagonists. Earlier we had loved doing basic designs of characters and consequently we had ended up with too many protagonists that do not all fulfil our very high standards of complexity, profundity, individuality and use within the plot. Hence, we’ve been spending more than a year now on analysing the characters’ potentials and possible overlaps, and developing the characters that had enough potential – characters that actually meant much to us ourselves. We’ve kicked “garbage/fodder characters” out of our story and created “fusions” of characters that were too similar to each other.

Now by the fifth time of rewriting we thought we had finally solved every character and role issue.
Until we’ve realised there were two very precious and already nostalgic characters that were supposed to be one. It might sound a bit complicated – maybe paradox. The matter is that our characters have been existing for years now. In the beginning they were characters we randomly drew or we “played” our own stories with.
So, and there were those two special characters having different names, different physical designs… but the same base concerning the inner life. Looking back we don’t understand how we could have been so blind not realising something that obvious. That’s probably because we took both characters into our hearts.

But now we couldn’t deny it any more: Those two characters stole the possibilities of each other. It’s like character A was the missing part of character B and the other way around. When character A worked in our story, there was a problem with character B and when character B was alright, there was something wrong with character A…

The step we now finally did is combining character A and B to a character C.
A big and very hard decision for us but altogether we know it was right.
And the worst thing of all: That there almost weren’t any problems of combining these significant characters… Öö Being honest the physical design was the toughest nut to crack…

Now we are eventually working on the first picture of this new “character C”. Her name is Sachi but more you will learn when the time for her picture has come
The character now finally is complex, multifaceted and the most important fact: Everything character A and character B ever had. There won’t be anything missing you liked about Sachi’s “old parts”. That’s a promise Sachi is a combination of A and B –literally. As already said:
We’re positively surprised how well this worked… öö

And yeah. Even though we start repeating ourselves now: The decision was hard.
Heart-breaking in some way. But in the end it was the best and so we’re happy with the outcome
Hopefully you will be, too!!
